Journey of Resilience & Hope – the story of Abdul Malik Ahmadzai

Abdul Malik Ahmadzai dreamt of becoming a doctor, but the odds were against him: he was a refugee from Afghanistan living in Pakistan, and he lost his father to cancer while he was a ninth-grade student.

Abdul Malik Ahmadzai dreamt of becoming a doctor, but the odds were against him: he was a refugee from Afghanistan living in Pakistan, and he lost his father to cancer while he was a ninth-grade student.

As his family struggled financially, at a young age Abdul had to find a job to support them. He learnt sewing and worked in a tailor’s shop, but even that did not  distract him from pursuing his dream. He continued his education while working and saved up every rupee to cover his fees.

When he first heard of Alight Pakistan’s scholarship program, even his relatives were skeptical about his chances to get it to continue his studies. Undeterred, Abdul travelled alone to the capital city of Islamabad, passed the rigorous written exam, and excelled in his interview. He was selected as one of the scholarship recipients!

“This is not just my success – it belongs equally to everyone who believed in me when no one else would.”

Although there was reason to celebrate, another challenge emerged soon after: Abdul developed a chronic back pain that led to spinal surgery. Even then he remained steadfast in his studies, driven by a newfound sense of purpose to work in health care.

Returning to Afghanistan, he enrolled in a private medical university. There, his determination shone through: from his very first semester to graduation, he ranked first in every class. He completed his MD with a remarkable 94 percent overall score – a testament to his relentless effort, resilience, and belief in what was possible with hard work and opportunity.

Today, Dr. Ahmadzai serves in a busy hospital and is preparing for his specialization exams. His journey proves that with the right support, a student from the humblest beginnings can transform his own life – and, in turn, support countless others.

Dr. Ahmadzai  remains profoundly grateful to Alight Pakistan. He credits the organization’s guidance, mentorship, and values for giving him a firm foundation. “This is not just my success,” he says. “It belongs equally to everyone who believed in me when no one else would.” Having realized his own dreams, he now aspires to pay that generosity forward – helping the next generation of scholars rise to their fullest potential.
