A free market for newcomer families

When Isnino visited Alight's Minneapolis Hub for employmentsupport, she didn't expect to leave with books for her children and a feweveryday essentials. But that's exactly what Alight’s new Free Market is for. Newcomer families visiting the Hub are invited to fill areusable bag with whatever they need – personal care products, children'sbooks, socks, water bottles, soccer balls, and more. The Free Market was madepossible through a partnership with Welcome.US.

Alight-A-Whirl: Supporting displaced communities through creativity

During Art-A-Whirl – the largest annual open studio art tour in the United States, our Minneapolis Hub was transformed into a vibrant gallery filled with art works donated by artists from Minnesota and around the world. Between May 15-17 2026 we welcomed thousands of visitors, who came to purchase art, and to hear the stories behind it. Every piece sold helped support displaced families – from neighbors rebuilding their lives in Minnesota to communities across the globe navigating displacement with courage and resilience.

Neighbors supporting neighbors

Alight’s Minneapolis Hub is a place where neighbors, supporters and newcomer families connect and community is built. This is where volunteers are contributing their time and their hearts: packing supplies, welcoming families, delivering groceries, and creating moments of connection that truly matter. As Laura, one of the volunteers, shared: “In the midst of this sad and heavy time, it just feels good to be together. There is this kind of hopefulness around the fact that people are showing up for each other and finding ways to support”

In the United States, Alight’s staff decorated an Airbnb for a family of newcomers so they could properly celebrate the holidays away from home.
