Start with giving – and inspiring others to do so

For Teresa and RJ Devick, giving has never been an abstract idea. It has been a way of living – woven into their marriage, their work, and their family. “The one thing RJ and I have always had in common – sometimes the only thing,” Teresa laughed, “is that our values are based on sharing what we have and helping others. We’ve been very blessed in life, and this is how we give back.”

We’ve been very blessed in life, and this is how we give back.”

With daughters from South Korea and Ethiopia, they see the world as “just one big place,” as Teresa put it. Helping people wherever they are feels natural. And after their youngest daughter’s early struggles with malnutrition, food insecurity became especially personal. “As human beings we all want the same things: safety, food, peace, and joy,” Teresa explained. “This is something that shouldn’t get lost.”

“There’s Always Joy”

Their journey with Alight began decades ago, when an earthquake struck Iran. The local newspaper urged people to give through organizations already on the ground – and Alight was there. “That’s how we got connected,” Teresa recalled. “And we’ve been with Alight ever since.”

What kept them committed was Alight’s approach: “We love Alight because of the way they help people where they are,” Teresa explained. “They don’t just throw money at the situation hoping that it’s going to fix it. They get in there, they hire local people, and they help make displaced people’s lives better – and hopefully give them an opportunity to thrive, to experience joy – even in a difficult situation they are facing right now.”

RJ agreed. “There’s always joy,” he said. “There always seems to be an element of joy to whatever Alight does, which I find incredible given the challenges with which they work.”

A Computer Lab in Rwanda

One of Teresa’s most memorable experiences with Alight came during a trip to Rwanda. Sitting with young refugees, she listened as they spoke about their struggles and their dreams. Many had finished school but had little to do, with no way to connect to opportunities beyond the camp.

“They talked to us about how amazing it would be to have a computer lab,” Teresa remembered. “Somewhere they could reach out to the world, do job applications, apply to college.”

Inspired, Teresa and others partnered with Jacques, a staff member from Rwanda, to make it happen. A computer lab was built in the camp – and later another one in a different camp. “I got to go back a year or two later and see it in action, even sit in on a coding class,” Teresa said. “It was amazing to see how impactful it could be, how much it added to their lives.”

Projects like the computer lab, or more recently the Shelter Depot – which provides refugees with tools, materials, and the dignity to improve their own shelters – speak to what they admire most about Alight. “It’s the little things,” Teresa said. “The fact that they’re asking people what they want and need. Maybe they can’t do it all, but they’ll do some of it. Nothing is impossible in Alight’s eyes, and I just love that.”

For RJ, Alight’s principle of doing the doable is key: “Do the doable. It doesn’t always have to be big and massive changes. Little good things can really add up. And Alight understands that. They meet people where they are, listen to what they need, and try to spark joy, even in hard places.”

Feeling Part of the Team

Part of why Alight remains close to their hearts is how the organization treats its supporters. “With some non-profits, you just send a check and never hear back,” Teresa said. “But Alight brings you in. The Changemakers program, for example – we got to vote on projects, meet others who shared our values, even travel together. That meant so much. We weren’t just donors. We were part of the team.”

That sense of belonging, combined with Alight’s human-centered approach, keeps them inspired. RJ put it simply: “We are more committed because we’re more involved, more engaged.”

Giving as Legacy

Teresa and RJ’s professional lives and personal values have always intertwined. Since 2001, RJ has been a partner at Bond&Devick – a financial planning firm rooted in values-based planning. “We align our clients’ investments with what matters to them, but we also talk about legacy – how to care for family, how to care for community,” RJ said.

It’s the same philosophy that guides their own estate planning. “Our charities are like an extra daughter,” RJ explained. “We’ll leave money to our three daughters, but also to the organizations we love. Alight is one of them.”

They’ve also set up a Donor Advised Fund (DAF), ensuring that what isn’t passed directly to family will continue to support the causes closest to their hearts. “The DAF has the beneficiaries, and Alight is one of those,” RJ explained.

For them, legacy giving is about more than writing a will. It’s about modeling generosity for their family and community. “We call it ‘livacy’ – giving while you’re alive, while legacy is giving after you’re gone,” RJ said. “And it’s contagious. When our clients see us involved, they want to give too.”

A Lasting Ripple

For Teresa and RJ, giving isn’t just about generosity – it’s about connection, impact, and joy. Their journey with Alight reflects a deep belief that even the smallest acts of kindness can ripple outward, creating lasting change.

As Teresa put it, “We’ve been very blessed in life, and this is how we give back.” And in doing so, they’ve inspired others to give too – leaving not just a legacy, but a living example of what it means to truly care for the world.
