Uganda Transit Center Response

Alight is fundraising to support Uganda’s Transit Centers. They are the first lifeline for people fleeing conflict in places like eastern DRC and South Sudan - where over 70% women and children find safety, food, and care after exhausting journeys. With arrivals far exceeding projections and overcrowding threatening dignity and health, Alight is fundraising to expand shelter, strengthen water and sanitation, and deliver protection services so every family can begin their displacement journey with resilience and hope.

First Refuge, First Dignity

Uganda is the largest refugee-hosting country in Africa, welcoming more than 1.6 million displaced people from 13 nations. At Alight’s four Transit Centres, families are met with hot meals, medical care, and safe shelter, often within hours of arrival. By investing today, you ensure that families fleeing war are greeted not with despair, but with dignity and hope.

Innovation That Transforms Response

In Nyakabande, Alight led the shift from analog to digital registration, significantly improving first response at the borders. Families now rest, eat, and recover sooner, while governments and partners receive real-time data that strengthens planning for WASH, protection, and shelter. This innovation means refugee services can be anticipatory rather than reactive, giving families a safer, stronger start.

Durable Solutions, Lasting Impact

Massive influxes in 2025 have forced dangerous overcrowding, reducing space to 0.8m² per person at times, with overstretched water and sanitation systems. Alight is leading with semi-permanent shelters, enhanced latrines, and expanded clean water access, paired with protection and psychosocial care. Your support makes these durable investments possible, lowering long-term costs and protecting dignity from day one.
